Thermodynamic Boiler Design Service

Thermodynamic Computer models calibrated from many years of boiler performance field testing on a wide range of boiler types operating up to maximum sub-critical pressure limits. These models can be used to evaluate the heat transfer within almost any water tube boiler operating up to these limits. Our expertise covers major boiler types firing a range of fuel including oil, gas, and coal. We have extensive experience with boilers firing a wide range of solid fuels on grate firing systems including travelling, pinhole, and vibrating grate, firing wood waste, bagasse, coal and other biomass fuel sources.

Third Party Design Reviews & Risk Assessments:

Very cheap boilers can be sourced from less prominent manufactures but they can carry a substantial design risk and many companies have been caught out buying  plant from these sources. You need to know whether the boiler you are being sold can achieve its rated output and what are the likely risks that need to be mitigated in any purchase agreement? Whilst we can’t carry guarantees on third party boiler plant, Design Boiler’s thermodynamic design review service can potentially address many of the major risks associated with purchases low cost boiler plant from these countries.

Our Thermodynamic Design Review service includes:

  • Boiler Performance Computer modelling to determine if the boiler has sufficient heating surface to achieve its rated steam flow ate specified steam temperature and pressure conditions.
  • Review of performance guarantees.
  • Identify potential sources of boiler load limiting – such as short comings in fan performance.
  • Identify potential areas of risk which would require further qualification from the Boiler manufacture or additional clarification in boiler purchase contracts.
  • Options for comprehensive circulation analysis using inhouse boiler circulation computer modelling resources.
  • Provide an expert review of proposed boiler plant based on the boiler manufacturers official offer.

Circulation Analysis

The highly turbulent nature of Boiler circulation can’t be effectively modelled with CFD. Instead it requires the application of advanced fluid dynamics techniques which incorporate extensive empirical data and thermodynamic analysis. Design Boiler have an extensive suite of boiler circulation analysis software that has been calibrated using nuclear tracer techniques on multiple boilers over a wide range of operating pressures. We are boiler circulation specialists and use this software to model the internal circulation of boiler plant to either redesign or diagnose major problems in existing boilers.

Our extensive range of thermodynamic computer modelling software for both boiler performance and circulation analysis gives us an unrivalled ability to diagnose defects in existing boiler plant. In most cases we will identify the defect and proved a re engineered solution to the problem. Using our thermodynamic modelling resources, we can test multiple options and provide appropriate criteria from which the most cost-effective solution can be found.

 

Superheaters Airheaters & Economisers – Add-Ons & Replacement Boiler Parts

Boilers are not mass produced and sourcing replacement parts to effect repairs can be problematic and expensive. Parts sourced from boiler manufacturers can incur substantial cost margins and long delivery time frames. Design Boiler can work with you and your local engineering fabricator, to provide an alternative source of replacement parts which in most cases will be far more cost effective and can meet tight delivery time frames.

 

Fuel Conversions

We have been involved in a wide range of fuel conversions; including oil to gas, biomass to coal, bagasse to coal, gas to solid fuel firing. Design Boiler’s extensive range of thermodynamic boiler modelling software enables the performance simulation of an exiting boiler on multiple alternative fuels. Alternative fuels will usually result in a significant variation in thermal heat transfer profiles within the boiler and this can significantly impact the internal circulation within the boiler. We are also able to assess these impacts using our circulation modelling software resources.
