Bagasse to Coal Firing Conversion

Design Boiler is skilled and experienced in undertaking the necessary computer modelling , design work and field testing required for converting bagasse fired boilers to coal firing.  A typical bagasse to coal firing conversion scenario is as follows:

CASE STUDY SCENARIO:

Dwindling bagasse supplies to a sugar refinery drive a need to convert one of their boilers to dual firing on bagasse and coal. Typically this is achieved by replacing the pin hole grate with a travelling grate and retrofitting  mechanical stokers to feed the coal.  The combustion of coal generates significantly different heat transfer profiles with the boiler than when firing bagasse, and the impact of these on boiler’s internal circulation needs to be assessed. In addition there are a raft of other issues that need to be investigated including, superheater steam temperatures, furnace slagging, ashing system , air heater performance,  dust collection systems and the suitability of the boiler fans.

METHODOLOGY:

Site Visit:

1..Collect operating data, boiler geometric information and specifications .

Boiler Performance Modelling:

2. Undertake computer software modelling  to simulate boiler performance over a range of load scenarios when firing both bagasse and coal.

Analysis:

3. Identify potential operation issues  including:

  1. Furnace & superheater slagging
  2. High steam temperatures,
  3. Steaming economiser problems,
  4. Air heater performance and any need for modifications,
  5. Boiler corrosion exacerbated by firing coal containing sulphur,
  6. Furnace suitability for firing specific coal species (furnace volume and plan area),
  7. Derive boiler draught loss from computer models to determine suitability of fans,
  8. Evaluate need to upgrade existing dust collector / wet scrubber; and
  9. Other issues that may be relevant to a specific site.

4 . Identify strategies to address problems identified.  Test proposed remedial options using computer models if practical.

5. Prepare final report and submit to client.
